Living in Paradise aka The Greek Islands!! *Crete*

Saturday morning we woke up to eat breakfast and leave Lincoln College at 7:30. We also had to hug our friends on the western track goodbye until we meet up with them in Venice. We drove to the London airport to take a flight to Athens. Our flight departed at 11:15 and we landed at around 5 Athens time. Right when we landed, we took a bus to the overnight ferry called Knossos Palace. We got on the ferry at around 6 even though it wasn’t leaving until 9. We settled into our tiny cabin for four (Grace, Sam, Olivia, and I) and then met everyone on the deck for a celebratory drink and to enjoy the view. We then went back to get ready for dinner in the ferry restaurant. After dinner, we went back to the pool-side deck to celebrate the eve of Jane Bartlett’s birthday and then when it opened, we went to the disco bar to hang out until midnight. We then all went to sleep after a very long travel day.

Sunday morning the ferry docked at 6 am but we didn’t have to wake up and leave until 8. Once we left the ferry, we got on a bus to drive to the area of Knossos Palace, the site we were visiting for the day. We first split up into 2 groups to enjoy breakfast at 2 local restaurants, paid for by the program. After a nice long breakfast, we visited Knossos Palace. It is the site of what is thought to be a Grecian (Minoan) Palace, but it looks more like a community because of the different types of buildings, including religious ones and storage rooms, which we never saw in the Roman sites in York. Fun fact on this place is that the excavator of this site was Sir Arthur Evans, who is from Oxford and was the keeper of the Ashmolean Museum, one of the oldest museums in England. After discussing and walking through the site, we took a little break and then walked through the Crete Museum, which houses some of the ancient artifacts from the palace. They had original fresco pieces and the lifesize storage jugs as well.

Next, we took the bus to the beach, where we ate lunch literally on the beach and then laid out and swam for a couple hours. Image

Around 5 or so, we left the beach for our hotel. We checked into our huge rooms, sat by the pool, and then Jane Bartlett, Mary Caroline, Laura, and I put our feet in these fish tanks where their fins flapping got rid of all the dead skin. It was like the fish were eating our feet but it just tickled a little bit. It was like getting a pedicure – they really cleaned up my cuticles! ImageImage

After that, we took long showers and dressed up for dinner in the hotel. It was buffet style but pretty good food. Then we went to an outside patio to enjoy birthday cake for Jane Bartlett’s birthday. In the next room, they were setting up karaoke so we decided to stay and watch for a little bit – even JB sang Dancing Queen. Laura and I then headed to our rooms to write our journal entry for the day and then hit the hay for our wake up call of 5 am.
